Castanets - You Are the Blood
Castanets hail from San Diego, a city filled with haunting bands (Black Heart Procession, Pinback, Tristeza...), spanish ghosts and tons of reverb. Cathedral, the band's debut album, released last year of asthmatic kitty records, is the best folk record released in a long time, filled with broken drums, drunk saxophones, echoing guitars, all lost in thick smog. Raymond Raposa's voice and words are bare and delicate, fragile and confident. One of 2004's very best records.

one more time i'm totally agree with your description.
do you know 'currituck co.' and 'akron family'? yesterday i bought these records and i'm totally fascinated with them. sounds like john fahey mixed with 'espers' and all of the new psych-folk bands like 'the blithe sons', 'the one ensemble of daniel padden', 'nick castro' or ben chasny (six organs of admittance).
there are a lot of nice records waiting for us to be discovered.
i have only heard of these bands but never actually listened to their music, i will check them out!
i write reviews of records and concerts (josephine foster will play next wednsday!!) in sinsalaudio
you can find some references (maybe the rates 0/10 could guide you) about some of the wonderful records published last year here: boletin3
comments are in spanish :(
